Why check the gate?

Well...It combines my two favorite things - the first is being on set, whether its a movie, commercial or TV set. When the scene is finished the assistant director will say "check the gate..." - which means the camera dude checks the film gate (where the film is exposed to light) if its a clean gate, we move onto another scene, if there is a hair in the gate, he cleans the gate and we re-shoot whatever we just did...nobody ever want to hear the words "hair in the gate"! Secondly, I think most people whose dogs have the run of the house and garden will "check the gate" before leaving the dog to make sure it is closed...So there ya go!

Film Terms

Tailsticks or Tail Slate - Sometimes it is necessary to mark a shot (with a slate or clapperboard) at the end rather than at the beginning. When this is done it is called a tail slate or tail sticks. It is customary to call “Tail Slate!” just before clapping the slate, so that the person syncing the film does not get confused. To easily distinguish a tail slate, the slate is held upside down when marking the shot.

The Abby Singer Abby Singer worked as a production manager and assistant director. His name has become famous in Hollywood as a phrase describing the second-to-last shot of the day ("the Abby Singer"). There are several stories as to how this came about. One is that he would mislead his crew into thinking that the second-to-last of the day was actually the last shot. Another is that, as a production manager, when Abby Singer came down to set it meant the crew was allowed to complete the shot they were doing and then do only one more. According to Abby, however, it was actually because as an assistant director when the crew reached the second-to-last shot of the day he would say "this and one more" so they could start wrapping (putting away) anything that was not needed for that or the last shot of the day ("the martini shot").

Martini Shot is a Hollywood term that describes the final shot set-up of the day. The Martini Shot was so named because "the next shot is out of a glass", referring to a post-wrap drink. There is also the double meaning of 'shot' between the film term and the drinking term.

Hitting a Mark is an actor's term for moving to the correct, predetermined position during rehearsals and during camera takes so that the camera can smoothly record the action; 'mark' refers to pieces of crossed tape on the floor to signify positions
